A nonprofit research preserve. Considered one of most important research sites for paleoecology, archeology, history of the Polynesians, and the study of how, humans as a species, affect ecosystems with no previous contact with our species. The reserve is also a refuge for endangered Hawaiian plants (over 100 species), where friendly, giant tortoises are employed as lawn mowers, and enjoy having their necks rubbed. As a public service, the cave is opened to visitors from 10am-2pm, Wednesday through Sunday, with great tour guides for the donation only tours. One of my favorite sites on the planet.

Not much here, but a cool little hike to take the kids. A few areas that have steeper stairs, but not too bad. Really great views of the beaches below, but no access unless you want to break brush.

Don't forget to cross the bridge and see the enclosed farm area. You can walk over the fence via the steps and see the tortoises that keep the garden healthy. They are huge. Then walk down to the wetland area and see all of the birds. Many rare species are there and you can bring a bird book to mark off all you see.

Very nice cave. If you like a little bit of a hike. You will enjoy checking this cave out. But make sure you wear tennis shoes not flip flops

This was so much fun and very interesting! The hike to see it is not hard and kids will love that you go through a small cave hole to get in to the actual cave. The volunteer docent is very well informed and tells a great story. Good for all ages and amazing history. Well worth the time to visit.

Make sure you go when there the tour guide is there (donation only) because the volunteer tour guide will tell you the history of the place. When I went, the volunteer tour guide gave a lovely 15 minute speech about the cave which I found fascinating. Charming retired man!
