Some of the worst service it had here. Hostess gave us attitude when we asked for some extra crayons for our two kids. Her response " I think I already gave you 6." When we asked for extra paper napkins the waitress got them but dropped them in our chip basket as she walk by saying "I'm busy." We were left with empty drinks for long periods of time, at one point the waitress said, " I think you ordered a beer, right?" This was 20 minutes after i ordered. The food is no better than any other taco shack on the island. Don't waste your money here.
We arrived about 10 minutes early, and went to check in with the hostess. She was helping another guest directly in front of us and I heard her ask for a view. The hostess calls upstairs and says, “I see you’re holding this table for a 6:00 (mine) but can we move them and give this guest a better view?” Then took them up to a table with a very nice view of the sunset over the ocean. I then gave her my name, she scrambles through her seat map, and sends us upstairs where they seat us next to a very large tree. It was a nice tree, but a huge step back from what they had reserved and then gave away right in front of me.
Maybe it seems petty, but don’t tell me you’ll accommodate my request and then give it to the person in front of me. Anyway, I was annoyed to the point where I asked to be relocated after the drinks came. They gave us a better table closer to the view, and I tried to enjoy myself.
So my wife and I aren’t big fans of fine dining. Usually we prefer upscale steakhouses for special occasions. We’re on Kauai for our 10th anniversary and the Ruth’s Chris had not yet opened. We chose Tortilla Republic after I called ahead for a reservation and asked for a table with a view of the ocean, trying to add some ambiance for a special night. The hostess who took the reservation said it would not be a problem.
Great chips and salsa, beer is cold, they do not serve any tap beers here. The happy hour is very affordable and has a good selection of quick bites. We ordered the Mexican corn, it was leaving a bit to be desired. The service here was quick and they were very attentive, the burrito is huge and they have a great selection of tequilas. I will be back, hopefully they get a little more authentic with their corn rather than trendy.
Food was decent, but overpriced. For the record, we ate in the downstairs 'casual' level. Upon check-in, we were told it would be a wait, but then they seated us immediately, but warned us it could be a wait even as they seated us. Confused? We were too. Service was less than stellar. Drinks sat empty and we received two baskets of tiny fragments of what may have been tortilla chips in a previous life. (Another server came by and noticed, and fixed without asking). Biggest complaint, no ability to mix and match tacos.
Great margaritas, friendly staff, and good food for a good price. Southwest style interior makes for an interesting atmosphere, with outdoor seating reminiscent of Miami. Pretty sure this is one of the only places around with a nightlife scene going on as well. Also, get the bacon brusselsprouts.
The food was good, but very pricey for Mexican cuisine. The only reason I went as high as 3 stars is because our waiter, Clifton, was awesome. Very attentive, accommodating, and friendly. All in all the food was good, our waiter was good, but the snub and the cost left a bad taste in my mouth.
