Amazing, off the beaten path adventure. Be prepared for a long drive on a dirt road to get there, but totally worth it.
It's a nice little place, but don't expect something like a zoo, that's what it definitively is not, luckily.
Oh, and the tortoises are indeed impressive. They are "running" around in their large territories, eating and... looking old.
Came across this place 2 years ago. Well worth the hike
This field marks one end of the Makauwahi Cave trail. To reach it, cross the bridge near the cave and walk across the parking lot there. According to their website, at this place they try to reestablish native plants that all around the island have been driven away by intrusive plants brought from overseas. We were told that this was a tortoise farm, but learned that the tortoises there are kept to keep the introduced plants from taking back this area. Interestingly, the tortoises only eat the intrusive plants.
As described in another review. Not only is this a place for native plant cultivation--a nursery used to grow plants to restore the vegetation around the cave, but it is also an agricultural experiment project. In the area where the tortoises are, breadfruit and other trees are being grown. The tortoises are the African sulcata spurred type. They outgrow the yards of previous owners, and are put out to pasture here, with the job of eating the weeds--which they seem to enjoy very much.
Regrowing native plants, and the tortoises eat the weeds
Respect the place, the plants and the animals living there, and don't forget to leave a small donation, it's worth keeping these projects alive. ;)
