The cave and Richard, who was there and gave us a tour, were awesome. We've been to the south shore 10 times and this is our first time visiting the cave. You'll never guess what one of the bodies that was found buried in the cave was wearing. Bring water and enjoy the kneel-down entrance on the way in the cave.
You have to take a dirt road to get out here, which we didn't quite realize until we were on it. When we reached the trailhead a gentleman with binoculars informed us that it was after five and the cave was "closed". We thought it was weird he told us that, but we told him thanks and continued on the short path that lead to the cave. When we reached the entrance we realized what he meant, the only entrance was a small hole and it had a metal blocking the entrance. We still got a good view of the cave while walking down. At the bottom you can cross a bridge, and this takes you to a very isolated beach. You can then meander up the rocks to the right, and there are all sorts of paths to explore, and the cliff-line is absolutely gorgeous. If you are staying in Poipu I would absolutely recommend popping over to explore the paths. But just be aware the cave is apparently only open from 8-5.
Don’t know how one gets into the cave area, didn’t loiter long to figure it out; no one was there. If you walk down to the water and turn right up the cliffs it’s a very simple hike (walk) along the cliffs looking back at the terrain behind the beach you dumped onto at the end of the small fresh water stream. Hog the coast/cliff until it meets the golf course fairway then hike back a bit further north. The ‘cave’ part of the hike was a 2.5 but the views along the cliff rounded it all up to about a 3.5.
Quick hike to unique geological site; pretty beach walk adjacent; terrific stable (CJM) nearby if you want to ride in the area. Only stable on Kauai that has access to the beach. Cave location not well marked till you get to trailhead; from there, it is well marked and maintained.Take road to left (if you go right, you end up at stable).Park along side of road and trailhead is on left.Quick and easy 10min walk to cave. Enjoy the view at the top.Two different docents...one can tell you entertaining facts about the site; the other knows a lot of interesting history of the area. We were happy to donate to preserving this site... not a hard sell; my kid even had to look for the box.
Make sure you look up the tour dates. We came when it was closed and you can't see much due to a locked gate
